That is an email to a person, not a mailing list. We write back once, when it opens, and never again unless you write first.
Four promises, kept before a single gift
- Support unlocks nothing. Everyone gets the same app. There is no premium version, no supporter badge, and no feature behind a payment — and there never will be.
- The app never asks. Giving happens here, on your own initiative. The app will not ask on first launch, not before or during prayer, and not after you have used it. It has no nag screen, because there is nothing to say "not now" to.
- Any amount is welcome. The amounts above are suggestions. What you give says nothing about you, and nothing about your worship.
- What the route costs is printed here. We take nothing from what you give. If the payment route itself takes a fee, this page says how much, before you give.
What your support pays for
Only things we can show you. There is no server, no advertising and no marketing budget.
- Hours. OneQibla is built by one person, with every change recorded in a changelog two hundred releases long. The code is not public yet; whether it will be is an open question. Support buys hours.
- Review and translation by people who know. Qualified reviewers from more than one tradition for the calculation methods, the coordinates and the holy places; native speakers for every language. If any of them asks to be paid for their time, this is where that comes from. Nothing ships in a language a native reviewer has not read.
- Accessibility — large text, screen readers, older phones, and the testing that proves they work.
- The fees. Apple charges US$99 a year and Google US$25 once to publish an app; the domain costs a few dollars a year.
What it will never pay for: advertising, analytics, tracking of any kind, or a "premium" tier.
Why it takes a moment to open
Who receives it is settled: Lingtao, personally, in Hong Kong — the one person who builds the app. That means a gift is a gift to a person, not to a charity: it is not tax-deductible anywhere, and no charity receipt can be issued. If you want a note confirming what you gave and when, write and ask.
What is still being set up is the route. Every card route takes a fee. In Hong Kong, a bank transfer by FPS costs nothing to either side, which makes “we take nothing from what you give” literally true — but only for people with a Hong Kong bank account. Everyone else needs a card route, and this page prints that route’s fee before the first gift. We would rather you saw this than a form that could not answer the question.
Help without money
The things holding the app back are not all money.
- Read a translation critically. Arabic, Urdu, Bengali, Indonesian, Malay, Turkish, Persian, Hausa, Swahili, French or Russian as a first language, and the patience to read a screen of religious wording. Nothing ships in a language until someone qualified has.
- Review the religious content. A scholar or a student of the Islamic sciences willing to look at the calculation methods, the Qibla and the holy places — we would like to hear from you before anyone else.
- Try it on your phone and tell us what is wrong; the help page says how. And tell one person who cannot travel to the holy places.
